hey everyone,, vince weirick had caught a fish on tippy just by the mouth of grassy creek. you can tell from the first pic , it looks like a nice fish,, then on the other side it looks like freddy kruger...
we has seen alot of different stuff on fish, like cuts and bad scrapes, or even what looks like lamprey bites. BUT NOTHING LIKE THIS.. now i am not sure about keeping a undersized legal fish for them.. we will have to check on that one. but if i or any clients catch one like this i will call jed or dave and keep it in the livewell for them.. ..
Vince - here is the note I just got back from Dave Meuninck.
..."I will forward to my GLFHC colleagues. My guess is a bacterial infection that’s eating away the flesh causing the formation of the ulcers. I’ve seen similar cases here at the hatchery where a lesion forms at the base of a ventral fin that eventually opens up into a single large ulcer. Death eventually occurs when the spine and/or abdominal cavity is exposed. ADDL (Animal Disease and Diagnostic Lab at Purdue) said it was ulcerative dermatitis caused by a bacterium. Tough to say which one since the open sores easily become infected by secondary infections. If he catches another one, it would be ideal to put the fish on ice and get it to ADDL as soon as possible."
If you catch another one, you can call myself (260-244-6805) or Dave (547-255-4199) and we'll get it down to Purdue for further analysis. I'll let you know if Dave finds out more from the other disease folks.

Jed,
Vince Weirick here…Indiana muskie guide. I caught a fish yesterday morning on Tippecanoe Lake right in front of where Grassy Creek dumps into it. I have attached 2 pictures of the fish. One of me holding the fish in a horizontal pose and the other of some type of disease. The skin was almost like it was being eaten from the inside out or battery acid had been sprayed on its side. It was about 12"-18" in length and 4-5" wide down it's right side. I have two questions:
1. Do you know what kind of disease or injury this fish has by looking at the picture?
2 What should I do in the future if I catch something like this? (keep the fish for you or someone in the fisheries dept.? If so, who would I contact?)
Thanks,
Vince Weirick
